Hydration is always a challenge for us as athletes, especially when we are training. (If in marathon training~for example~I’m training for the Des Moines Marathon next month~the body is more vulnerable.) The harder and/or more frequently we train, the more our immune system is at risk of being disrupted by illness. There is more wear and tear on the body and we have to heal too in order to stay healthy. If we can keep ourselves tethered more tightly to wellness, we can ward off and minimize some illness. Prevention of illness is desirable for all of us. And with germs spreading easily, we can catch colds/flu from family and friends regularly.
As someone who has tried Nuun before but not this particular variety, I was interested to see how this new immunity version might be different. As an asthmatic, I was particularly interested in the anti-inflammatory ingredients, turmeric and ginger, because asthma is an inflammatory disease.
Nuun Immunity comes in tubes of 10 breakable tablets. The recommended dosage is 16 oz per tab. If you just want 1/2 tablet, the 1/2 line is marked, making it easy to break these in half for sharing or smaller size drink bottles.
The portability of the tablets is very advantageous and they travel well, not really having any issues with crumbling or breaking on trips.
So what is in Nuun Immunity? Both versions have elderberry, turmeric, echinacea, ginger, zinc, and 10 vitamins and minerals. In addition, the blueberry version has beet root powder for natural coloring. Both versions contain some avocado oil. Safe healthy ingredients. It is an effervescent immunity supplement, creating a fizzy drink for you in about 2 minutes. Just drop a Nuun tablet in the water/drink bottle and wait.
Trying these separately, probably everyone will prefer one flavor over the other. I preferred the blueberry tangerine but it’s a close one as I love orange citrus too. Also, I did try mixing both together in a 32 ounce bottle. That resulted in an interesting blend of tangy citrus. Not bad.
Mostly I used one tablet at a time, did break a few tablets to make sure they broke easily and they did. If you want a really cold one, leave a little room for ice at the top or add the ice first. With the fizzy element, Nuun does expand slightly in the bottle a little bit more than you might expect so be careful not to overfill the bottle.
At no time during the testing period did I become ill. However, as a runner who runs daily, fatigue is a regular visitor so my immune system can be a little vulnerable at times. Also, I lost a very close relative during the testing so my immune system was very vulnerable in dealing with that loss and grief. Nuun kept me on an even keel through that experience as I tested it in Nebraska and in Iowa.
Due to my asthma and the inflammation issues it presents, I do take daily turmeric tablets but sometimes I forget and during the testing, I did sometimes grab my Nuun for my turmeric dose for the day if I forgot. It did seem to help prevent illness that could have occurred.
There is a little bit of a recovery “bounce” that seems to occur with drinking this that I noticed. Maybe it’s the turmeric/ginger combo: the anti-inflammatory ingredients. It did seem to help me more than the other non-immunity versions of Nuun that I had tried previously.
Maybe this goes without saying but don’t shake your Nuun bottle (it’s fizzy). Some of my drinks I do have to shake to mix. But Nuun mixes by itself. No worries.
Negatives: None. I can’t think of any.
Would I recommend this? Absolutely! It’s vegan, it’s gluten-free, it’s low-calorie, and it has some anti-inflammatory properties with the turmeric and the ginger. It’s delicious and by the way…are you thirsty?
P.S. You can drink it anytime, not only at noon. Or before noon. Or in the afterNUUN.
