Stinky sports clothes. We all have them. There is a distinctive particular odor of effort, isn’t there? (See my previous blogpost about the Odor of Effort). The wonderful thing is: that odor from sweaty workouts doesn’t have to remain and linger upon our clothes. There is a simple solution. And it works very well.
In the beginning, I was skeptical. I wondered: can this really remove all the smelly/stinky odor from my running/workout clothes? Yes it can and it does.
First let me explain the dosage for the 2 ounce travel packets. For a medium/small load, you add only 1 envelope. For a large load, you add 2. The travel packets are perforated so they can be easily detached, especially for those situations where you don’t have a large load. (Advanced tip: if you save a tiny bit of detergent in the envelopes, you can hand-wash your hand-washable clothes/hats with them.)
Sweat really sticks to our clothes and stains too. (This is partly why I wear headbands under my hats so often, the headbands get stained from the sweat.) Some detergents aren’t strong enough to remove the stains or all of the odor. Other detergents leave artificial scents that bother those of us with sensitivity/allergies.
I tested this detergent during July, mostly using small/medium loads of wash although there was at least one large one. July workouts are very hot/humid here in Nebraska. Some of the clothes I washed using the detergent were from workouts from San Francisco and Iowa (slightly different climates).
When I began testing it, I tried smelling all the clothes as I removed them from the wash. They were completely odorless. After drying them, I checked again. No odor. No lingering sweaty scent. And I kept checking. Every load consistently produced clean clothes with no stinky sweaty odors that I could notice when I placed the clothes in the wash before washing them.
Dispensing the detergent is easy with the travel packets, you just tear them lengthwise across the top and pour. (Like I said earlier, save a little in the top or bottom of the packets if needed for hand-washable workout clothes/hats. It does work well.)
Perhaps the toughest test for the detergent was a load with 4 days of stinky sweaty running clothes from San Francisco and Iowa. I decided not to do anything to these clothes before returning to see if the Stink-Free detergent could handle it or not. No problem. It cleaned these clothes very well. Sadly, after this load, I realized I had used up the 10th envelope (5 travel packets X 2) and I was out of stink-free detergent.
How does this compare to other detergents? We use unscented Tide and that doesn’t always seem to remove all the stains/sweat/odor. Based on my experience, the Stink-Free detergent performed better than Tide. And it cleaned my wife’s workout socks very well too.
And if you have a high-efficiency washing machine like we do, no worries. Stink-Free Sports Detergent performs well in your washer too.
Sometimes when we run, my clothes get muddy too (sometimes from rain, sometimes from the dog’s paws). Stink-Free Sports Detergent removed all that. And I didn’t do any spot-treatment of my clothes. I didn’t need to because SFSD handled it for me.
As someone who washes workout clothes almost daily when I am home, this is a big discovery to find something that works this well. And if I order some more, we can keep our Tide supply a little higher to help wash everyone else’s clothes.
With hand washable workout clothes (like arm/calf sleeves) and hats, the Stink-Free Sports Detergent worked better than my experience using Tide or just mild soap from the kitchen. The sweaty headbands on the hats were restored to their original colors. And no lingering odor on any of these items.
