Posing with Cornhusker State Games Energy 5k silver & bronze age group medals

Tomorrow I am running in the Cornhusker State Games Energy 5k race for the third year in a row. Two years ago, I raced to a silver in my age group. Last year, bronze in my age group. Medal that’s missing? Gold.

What does the watch say? Let’s just say the watch is optimistic.

Can I really break my PR in a 5k as my Garmin predicts? (Did you know there is a race predictor to predict your projected 5k, 10k, half marathon, and marathon times on the Garmin Forerunner 620?) Sub-22:40? My PR is 23:03. That’s the fastest 5k PR I can confirm. I ran a 24:31 last year in this race, which was faster than 2012.

Haven’t done a lot of speed work for this race. Training for a 5k and 50k at the same time is really burning the candle at both ends. Try not to get burned. But sometimes undertraining slightly is better than overtraining. Why? Fresh legs.

So I’m excited. Short races are not my forte, they go so fast. Usually I start too fast like a jackrabbit and sometimes burn out in my shorter races. Adrenaline gets the best of me. Not this year. Going for steady splits in the 7’s (7 minute range). Trying to break 22:00. I’m confident I can do this. Why? I’ve lost a lot of weight, tomorrow will be day 250 of a runstreak, I’m filled with much more running knowledge than last year or the year before. I’ve done the work. I know what it takes to medal. Going for Gold!
